Udio
Udio is currently in a holding pattern while they build a "fully licensed" platform that lets you create tracks within label-approved rules, with a controlled setup.
Overview
Udio settled a big copyright case in late 2025 by making a deal with major music groups like UMG, Warner, and Merlin. This deal mostly shifted Udio from a new AI tool into a licensed partner working with big labels.
To follow these deals, Udio removed the option for users to download their tracks. It now aims to act like a Spotify-style platform for AI music, more controlled and legal.
But in doing that, it lost some of the open, anything-goes feel that first made it popular.
Launched in April 2024 it’s built by ex-Google DeepMind engineers and led by David Ding. Big names like Andreessen Horowitz will.i.am and Common put money in. It’s like Suno but gives two clips per prompt and comes with tools to help you build more from them.
Udio is free to start. You get a bunch of song generations per month. If you want more tools like longer clips style mimic and the Sessions visual editor you’ll need to pay. In June 2025 they dropped the Sessions canvas which shows chorus bridge and verse blocks you can rearrange. They also added a style-matching tool so you can say “make it sound like Bowie” and it’ll try.
Even beginners are getting slick songs that feel real. The AI writes lyrics using a language model and then builds the music around it. What powers the sound engine is private info for now.

UMG and Udio made a deal to work together on a licensed AI music platform. This ends UMG's part in the big copyright lawsuit it started last year with Sony and Warner against Udio. Udio's current model will stay online for now but users can't export tracks. Everything stays in what they call a "walled garden" while the switch to the new system happens. Songs made with it will be fingerprinted and filtered.
The new platform drops in 2026.

Udio made some changes to how their models handle track length. You’re no longer stuck picking between 32-second clips or 2-minute songs. Now there’s a slider to pick a custom length.
They also added quick playback. So you can start hearing your song while the rest finishes up in the background.
