Video2X

Video2X is a free open-source tool that boosts video quality by increasing resolution and smoothing frame rates. It runs on Windows and Linux and gives you both a command-line and a graphical interface. The tool packs multiple AI-based upscaling engines letting you pick the best one for your needs.

Overview

Originally built by K4YT3X in 2018 Video2X started as a hackathon project and turned into a full-fledged tool for making old or low-quality videos look better. It’s especially useful for anime classic movies and older recordings. With AI-driven algorithms it can take a 480p video and push it up to 1080p or even 4K keeping details sharp while reducing noise.

Video2X takes advantage of GPU acceleration which means if you have an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA support your videos will process a lot faster. This is a big deal when handling large files or when you need quick results. It also supports a bunch of video formats making it a solid choice no matter what kind of footage you’re working with.

If you don’t have a strong GPU Video2X works on Google Colab for free. Google lets you use powerful GPUs like the NVIDIA T4 L4 or A100 for up to 12 hours per session. Just don’t abuse the free access by running non-stop sessions or you might get banned. If you need better GPUs or longer runtimes Colab Pro or Pro+ are options. The Colab Notebook includes setup instructions.

People using Video2X say it does a great job improving video quality but it’s not instant magic. The process can take a while especially if your system isn’t too powerful. And like any AI-based tool it sometimes adds weird artifacts or smooths out details too much though it tries to avoid those issues.
