Black Forest Labs (FLUX)
Black Forest Labs runs a German AI group that builds the FLUX image models. It makes tools for text-to-image, editing and steady character or product shots, and offers API or self-host options.
Overview
Black Forest Labs runs a generative AI lab and makes image tools called FLUX. It works on image making and editing stuff. The FLUX line covers text-to-image, editing like inpainting or outpainting, and using several reference images to keep the look steady. It pushes high detail up to around 4 megapixels and it’s said the models beat others in this space. You can use it by API or grab the weights if you get the right license.
BFL is based in Germany. They built models like FLUX.1, Kontext, Pro and FLUX.2. These models handle text prompts, image edits and style control. And you can steer lighting and keep objects steady across shots.
FLUX.2 brings higher detail up to 4 MP. It supports several reference images so you can make steady characters or products. You can use an API or run the weights yourself with the right license.
There are limits for commercial use since some weights only allow non-commercial work. If you want to use “dev” weights for paid jobs -- you can , but you need to obtain a commercial licence (or use it through API of the partners).
You can make product shots for shops, steady brand assets and whole sets of matching images. Multi-reference setups help keep one character or item steady across many poses. Folks who host their own tools can run it on their own machines. Agencies or shops can use it for large batches.
You can try the models in their browser Playground. You can also plug into an API. If you need weights you can get them from GitHub or Hugging Face but some come with non-commercial rules
If you need a high-end image model for pro work check out Black Forest Labs FLUX series. It claims to handle high-res stuff and consistent assets better than most. Here’s the deal. It ticks a lot of boxes like open-weights and self-hosting. The tool has fancy features like multi-reference support and 4 MP output.

FLUX.1 Kontext stirred a mix of hype and hardware worry on launch. Early users are calling it a big step for smart editing and animation. The inpainting quality caught a lot of eyes.
People seem pumped about animation possibilities and how the edits look cleaner without breaking the whole image. Others liked that it might work like ControlNet but built into the model. That means simpler workflows without half-resolution hacks.
There’s also some doubt about character consistency. Some still lean on LoRA tools and want to see real proof this model can keep faces and styles stable across edits.
FLUX.1 Kontext is a promising, high-speed image editing model with open weights coming soon, but users are waiting to see how useful and “open” it really is once it runs locally.

Black Forest Labs has upgraded FLUX.1 Kontext with NVIDIA TensorRT support, enabling twice the inference speed on RTX GPUs. Model quantization has reduced memory usage from 24GB to 7GB (FP4) without quality loss. Production-ready variants in BF16, FP8, and FP4 formats are now available on Hugging Face.
