Dolly Shot (zoom in/out, push in/out)

A Dolly Shot involves physically moving the entire camera through space - typically on a wheeled platform (dolly) or track - either toward, away from, or alongside a subject. Unlike zooming (which changes focal length), the dolly preserves perspective shifts: foreground and background elements change relative size naturally as the camera moves.

Classic Example

Goodfellas, Copacabana nightclub entrance scene. Henry and Karen walk from the street, through the kitchen, and into the nightclub in one continuous shot. The camera dollies smoothly alongside and behind them the entire time.

Sub-Variants

  • Dolly In (Push-In) → Moves closer to subject; increases emotional intensity
  • Dolly Out (Pull-Out) → Moves away; reveals context or isolation
  • Dolly Alongside (Truck Shot) → Moves parallel; tracks motion
  • Arc Dolly → Moves in a curved path around subject

Subject & Background Behaviour

Subject Environment
Can remain centered or be followed dynamically Foreground/background shift in parallax
Appears to grow/shrink naturally with distance Depth relationships change realistically
Movement feels immersive and physical Space feels “entered” rather than magnified

Zoom Shot Changes focal length No physical movement; no parallax shift
Steadicam Shot Stabilized handheld movement More freeform, less mechanically linear
